UCSC's CASFS FARM
Kasese’s Sister City project all began with the UCSC "Farm" CASFS Center For AgroEcology and Sustainable Food Systems.
For several years, a previous major donor had paid for one student from Africa per year to come do the organic "Sustainable" farming 6-month internship at the CASFS farm on UCSC campus.
Santa Cruz LOVES organic farming. UC Santa Cruz pioneered organic farming worldwide!!
Probably the biggest buzzword on campus, and nationwide, and even WORLDWIDE these days is SUSTAINABILITY! And CASFS is all about Sustainability, so we are on the cutting edge of our university's and our city's environmental, moral and social justice values.
Since it was probably the first university program to pioneer studies of organic agriculture in the 1960s, CASFS, has been treasured by Santa Cruz city for pioneering academic studies of organic farming studies nationwide and globally.
Godfrey Kasozi, a 1999 CASFS graduate, runs CETRUD, one of the program's "international impact" that they are still celebrating!
And now the recognition is catching on throughout the University of California's 10 campuses statewide. This summer UC System President Napolitano's "Strategic Initiative" for the University of California system-wide is pushing Sustainable Food studies for all its 10 universities.
So yes, you can see why I am enthusiastic and confident that this is the right kind of Sister City relationship a the right time, that our ISI friendship program is helping to grow, a program that is not only changing the world out there, but is also changing our own city in a wonderful way.
Thanks for your prayers of support to unleash the Holy Spirit Power through our city, our university and our beloved CASFS program.
